Sergio Aguero has explained the circumstances behind the car crash in Amsterdam that ultimately got him injured ahead of Argentina’s decisive World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, as well as his secret to becoming Manchester City’s record goal scorer.
Aguero also revealed on Wednesday that he never expected to score so many goals so fast.
“I never thought I’d reach that record so quickly,” Aguero said in a candid chat. “Ever since I went to play for Manchester City, we won the Premier League Championship in our first year and I said to myself, ‘I hope we can grow on this.’ And then, I started to score, score, score.”
He added: “You need over 10 years to get such a record, and I only have played for six years and three months [with City] and I’m very happy for doing it in such a short amount of time.”
The fantastic striker has also enjoyed the relief of not playing in a highly charged environment, such as the one he had in his home country and in Spain, where he played for Atletico Madrid.
“[In Britain] there are no sports-only newspapers or TV channels. There’s only two pages for 20 teams, that also means people are more relaxed, it’s been this way for so long. People just enjoy the match and they root for the team all the time.”
Of the accident, Aguero said: “We took a cab at the hotel, and five minutes later, the driver was doing this weird maneuver. I was with a friend and said to him, ‘I’ll fasten my seat belt just in case.’ But I just couldn’t do it since it was sort of hidden.
“It was too tight, and I think that was the reason why I had my rib injured. I knew I had something going on because it hurt quite badly. I asked the doctor, ‘can I get there by Saturday?’ And he did this funny face. I asked him, ‘would it be next week?’ And he denied it. That’s when I said, ‘I want to kill myself.'”
Agüero is under contract with City until 2019, when he plans to return to his native land in order to play for Independiente before calling it quits.
“My idea has always been to return to Independiente as soon as my contract with City expires, even though the club has an option with a priority,” Aguero said.
