The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on journalists to ensure accurate and impartial reporting of the electoral process, warning against the dangers of fake news.
Speaking at a media forum organized by the Commission for reporters, producers, and on-air personalities, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Sam Olumekun, emphasized the critical role of the media in fostering democracy.
Olumekun, who was represented by the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, stated that misinformation could incite unnecessary tension and violence.

“The media is essential to democracy, and a democratic election is impossible without the media,” Olumekun said.
“I urge you to exercise caution and be diligent in verifying any information before disseminating it, particularly when it pertains to the Commission’s activities and the electoral process.”
He stressed the need for professionalism, adding, “By upholding the highest standards of journalism, you can play a key role in curbing the spread of fake news and ensuring the public receives accurate and credible information.”
Olumekun further announced that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across the 18 local government areas in the state would commence on Wednesday and end on October 29.
The INEC official urged the media to educate the public on the importance of peaceful participation in the electoral process and to provide fair and balanced coverage of all political parties and candidates.
“It is crucial that your reports remain objective and free from bias,” he added.
Speaking at the event, the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Ondo State, Mr. Biodun Amosun, highlighted the importance of the workshop in equipping journalists with comprehensive knowledge of the guidelines and procedures governing the upcoming election.
“INEC has put in place robust measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the election,” Amosun said.
“We aim to guarantee a free, fair, transparent, and credible election, and your cooperation is essential to achieving this goal.”
