The Kano State Government has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing its infrastructure and healthcare initiatives by allocating over N40 billion for various development projects within the state. This substantial investment underscores the government’s dedication to improving the lives and well-being of its citizens.
This financial allocation was officially announced in a press release issued by Baba Halilu-Dantiye, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Kano State, on a Tuesday. The announcement followed the deliberations and decisions made during the eighth session of the State Executive Council (SEC), where key projects were given the green light and funding was approved to ensure their successful execution.
Among the notable projects that received financial authorization from the State Executive Council is the construction of critical road infrastructure. The State Ministry of Works and Housing has been allocated a significant budget of N15.974 billion to undertake the construction of the Dan Agundi interchange underpass and flyover. This infrastructure project is aimed at improving transportation and connectivity in the region, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents and commuters.

In addition to the Dan Agundi interchange project, the State Government has also allocated N14.455 billion for the construction of the Tal’udu Interchange flyover. These ambitious road projects are poised to not only ease traffic congestion but also stimulate economic growth in the state by enhancing connectivity and accessibility.
The commitment to improving road infrastructure doesn’t end there. The Commissioner confirmed that the ministry has been granted N3.360 billion for the construction of a covered sewage conduit/road along the Jakara-Kwarin Gogau River. This project reflects the government’s dedication to addressing various aspects of infrastructure, including vital sewage and drainage systems, which play a crucial role in maintaining public health and environmental standards.
Furthermore, the State Executive Council has approved the allocation of N1,579,755,966 for the construction of the Kofar Waika – Unguwar Dabai – Yan Kuje Western bypass road in Gwale Local Government Area. Additionally, N1.350 billion has been earmarked for the construction of the Unguwa Uku ‘Yan Awaki -Limawa junction road in Tarauni Local Government Area, while N820 million is allocated for the completion of the Kanye – Kabo -Dugabau road in Kabo Local Government Area.
The commitment to road infrastructure development continues with an approval of N802.695 million for the completion and dualization of the Kofar Dawanau -Dandinshe – Kwanar Madugu road phase II. Furthermore, N458.443 million has been sanctioned for the re-award of a contract to facilitate the construction of reinforced concrete pedestrian bridges at various locations across the state. These initiatives are expected to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians, thereby improving the overall urban experience in Kano State.
In addition to the significant investments in road infrastructure, N420 million has been allocated for the rehabilitation of metropolitan streets and traffic lights. This commitment to urban development ensures that the state’s cities and towns are well-maintained, making them more livable and conducive for residents and businesses.
The State Executive Council also approved N200 million to clear outstanding payments for the Kwanar Kwankwaso road rehabilitation in Madobi Local Government Area. Furthermore, N107.6 million has been allocated for renovations at the Reformatory Institute Kiru. These investments in local infrastructure and facilities demonstrate the government’s focus on improving the living conditions and opportunities for its citizens.
Healthcare is another critical area receiving significant attention and funding. The State Executive Council authorized the allocation of N53.6 million to the Ministry of Health. This funding is intended to support the procurement of essential commodities and medications, ensuring the availability of free Accident and Emergency, Maternal, and Child Care services in public health facilities. This initiative is designed to promote access to quality healthcare services, with a focus on the well-being of mothers and children.
As part of this effort, N40.8 million has been approved for the payment of drugs, laboratory reagents, and consumables supplied to Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital. Additionally, N37 million has been set aside for settling the outstanding state’s contribution for the three rounds of the Diphtheria mass vaccination campaigns conducted across 22 Local Government Areas. These investments in healthcare infrastructure and services are vital to improving the overall health and well-being of the people of Kano State.
The commitment to education and higher learning is evident in the allocation of N56.7 million to the Ministry of Higher Education for the restoration of a fire-damaged theatre at Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies. This investment ensures that educational facilities are well-maintained and conducive to learning, benefiting students and the academic community.
In a move to address changing needs and priorities, the State Executive Council also considered and approved a second 2023 proposed supplementary budget/amendment, amounting to N24 billion. This budget includes N4 billion for recurrent expenditure and N20 billion for capital expenditure. This revision increases the 2023 approved revised budget to N350,389,266,018.12, pending approval by the state House of Assembly. This adjustment reflects the government’s flexibility in responding to emerging challenges and opportunities, ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed.
