In order to ensure a peaceful election for Kogi governor this coming Saturday, 18 different political groups have signed a peace deal.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the Action Alliance (AA) were among the political groups represented.
The New Nigerian Peoples Party, the Action Democratic Congress, the People’s Redemption Party, and the Zenith Labour Party are some of the others.
Retired General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Chairman of the National Peace Committee, spoke at the event and urged the governorship candidates in the state to vote their conscience.
Cardinal John Onaiyekan, standing in for Abubakar, asked the parties to uphold the agreement before, during, and after the election.
He expressed growing scepticism about the candidates’ sincerity and commitment to the peace agreement.
This is because “signing” has become a meaningless ritual that does little to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians. The players should know that we can’t be misled over and over again.
I have faith that our country will thrive if we take the correct steps. And it is for this that I pray.
“If the big players of this deal will play the game according to the rules of the game, we should be better off as a nation.
The election on November 11 should be free, fair, and peaceful, he said, so “we expect them to keep this accord and ensure that it will be.”
