The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, has approved the sum of N600 million for the payment of 2024/2025 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for 18,734 students in public secondary schools across the state.
The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, during a press briefing held in his office on Tuesday.
Jones explained that the payment aligns with the state’s Free Examination Fees for Public Schools Law, which mandates the government to cover examination fees for both internal and external examinations in public schools.
“With the enactment of this law, every internal and external examination for pupils in public primary and secondary schools becomes the responsibility of the state government,” the Commissioner stated.
He further revealed that the education ministry sought the governor’s approval for the payment in accordance with the law.
“For the 2024/2025 WAEC, we approached the Governor in line with the existing policy, and he approved the payment for 18,734 students,” Jones said.
The Commissioner noted that the policy aims to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians while addressing the problem of out-of-school children.
He emphasized that the initiative ensures 100% completion of education at the secondary school level.
Jones also expressed appreciation to school principals for their cooperation in facilitating last year’s WAEC registration process.
However, he issued a stern warning to any principal who might attempt to engage in misconduct, stressing that such actions would attract severe sanctions.
