Callistus Okafor, a former deputy national chairman of the Labour Party, has denounced Mr. Julius Abure’s continued occupation of the national chairmanship seat, labeling it illegal due to his lack of election by any convention.
Okafor criticized the planned national convention by the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, insisting that Abure must step down to allow for a strategic and all-inclusive convention to elect new national officers.
Speaking on an Arise TV program on Friday, Okafor expressed his disapproval of Abure’s actions, including the planned secret convention without elected delegates and the conduct of ward, local government, and state congresses.

“The last time LP held its convention was in 2014 at Akure. Since then, no convention has been held. Abure knelt down and begged to be made a member of the National Working Committee in our 2014 convention.
Abure was made Assistant Organizing Secretary. Even in our party constitution, there is no provision for the office of the assistant organizing secretary of the party.
Due to his begging for office, he was chosen as Labour Party assistant organizing secretary.
“No convention elected Abure as LP national chairman. All those parading as NWC members of the Labour Party are sitting on illegality,” Okafor asserted.
He further highlighted an agreement reached last year, stating that Abure would call a stakeholders’ meeting.
However, Abure extended his tenure without fulfilling this agreement.
Okafor called for Abure to step down and convene an all-inclusive stakeholder’s meeting to reach a consensus on the future of the Labour Party.
