The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Abayomi Arabambi, has disclosed that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) is set to meet to recommend the expulsion of its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over alleged anti-party activities.
Speaking on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Arabambi claimed that Obi, who had earlier been placed on suspension, continued to engage with rival political groups in what the party described as a violation of its constitution.
“You don’t join a political party and still keep your leg in another party. He knows it is unconstitutional to belong to two political parties at the same time,” Arabambi said. “They have succeeded in luring him to their side, and there he shall remain.”
The Labour Party spokesman added that the NEC would soon convene to formally adopt a recommendation for Obi’s expulsion, which would then require final approval at the party’s national convention.

“When we want to expel any member who acts contrary to our constitution, the NEC makes the recommendation, and final approval is given at the convention,” Arabambi explained. “So, Obi will be expelled from our party; he is no longer a member of the Labour Party.”
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election, is yet to officially respond to the latest development.
His recent involvement in coalition discussions with other opposition parties has generated tension within the Labour Party’s leadership, with some accusing him of disloyalty and double allegiance.
The move to expel him marks a new escalation in the party’s internal crisis as political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
