The Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern warning to federal lawmakers, particularly those from the House of Representatives elected under its banner, urging them to uphold the party’s supremacy or face disciplinary measures.
The caution came via a statement released on Monday by Obiora Ifoh, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary.
In the statement, the party expressed disappointment in the lawmakers’ conduct, noting that they have not lived up to the expectations of being true representatives of the people and the Labour Party.

The party highlighted the sacrifices made by Nigerians in electing them.
Ifoh specifically referenced a statement by Hon Afam Ogene, the LP’s caucus leader in the House of Representatives, questioning the conventional order of conducting conventions before state, local government, and ward congresses.
Ifoh criticized Ogene for his alleged lack of understanding of the party’s constitution, under which he was elected.
The LP’s spokesperson emphasized that the party’s constitution is distinct from those of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He expressed dismay at how LP members in the House of Representatives tend to rush to the media to criticize the party whenever significant decisions are made.
Ifoh lamented that despite the country’s numerous challenges, the LP lawmakers have not effectively represented the party’s interests or spoken up against injustices.
He accused them of prioritizing personal interests over the party’s welfare and urged them to desist from tarnishing the party’s image.
The LP highlighted the persecution its leadership has faced under the current government and criticized the lawmakers for failing to support the party during such trying times.
The statement concluded by calling on LP lawmakers to be true ambassadors of the party and to prioritize the interests of the people they represent.
