Boss of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr is concerned over the lack of match fitness of striker Kelechi Iheanacho ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying double header against Cameroon.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will first host African champions Cameroon before travelling to Yaoundé for the return leg.
Ahead of the crucial qualifiers, Rohr has voiced out his concern that Iheanacho’s lack of match fitness is a disadvantage for the Super Eagles.
The striker was one of Super Eagles worse performers in their 2-0 home loss to South Africa on Saturday, June 10 in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
According to a This Day newspaper report, Rohr in a meeting with the Techincal Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) pinpointed Iheanacho’s lacklustre performance as one of the reasons why the Super Eagles lost that game.
“We gathered that Rohr admitted that failure of Alex Iwobi of Arsenal and Iheanacho to click and dominate, arose from irregular playing time at their respective clubs in England,” part of the report reads.
Iheanacho spent the majority of last season on the bench and situation even got worse with the arrival of Gabriel Jesus at Manchester City.
Following Gabriel’s arrival, the 20-year-old was left out of the machday squad for five consecutive league games and subsequently featured sparingly at the second half of last season.
He has been linked with EPL sides, Leicester City and West Ham.
