The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has criticised the 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his comments on the conviction of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.
Obi had, in a statement issued by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, described Kanu’s arrest, detention and sentencing as “unfortunate,” arguing that the development exposed leadership gaps and could heighten tension across the country.

The statement, titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility,” also urged the Federal Government to embrace dialogue rather than confrontation.
Reacting in a statement on Sunday, Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, faulted Obi’s position, insisting it was inappropriate for political actors to comment on matters still undergoing judicial processes.
Oladejo cautioned against remarks that could be construed as undermining national security institutions or interfering with court proceedings.
He said Obi’s comments might be misinterpreted as an attempt to politicise a sensitive security matter, stressing the need for restraint and responsible communication from public figures.
The statement added that issues concerning national security and public order require balanced engagement, noting that all parties must respect judicial outcomes while allowing space for lawful appeals and constructive dialogue.
“National security matters should not be influenced by political considerations,” Oladejo said, urging leaders to prioritise unity and stability in their public statements.
He reiterated that the Federal Government remains committed to addressing cases relating to terrorism, treason and national stability strictly in accordance with the law and the constitution.
The party urged Nigerians to view Obi’s comments within the broader dynamics of political debate and to exercise restraint, emphasising the importance of responsible commentary on sensitive national issues.
