Al Merrikh have been crowned winners of the 2013 Sudanese Premier League, pipping bitterest rivals Al Hilal to the title.
The Omdurman-based club romped to the title courtesy a 2-0 win over Al Merrikh Al Fashir on Tuesday, November 19 at the Al-Merrikh Stadium. Ivorian-import Tie Olivier netted both goals.
The victory takes Merrikh’s tally to 63 points, five clear of Hilal who play Ahly Shendi later on Wednesday (November 20) in the final game of the season. The outcome of the game will mean very little to the standings at the top, meaning Hilal will finish runners-up.
Both Merrikh and Hilal will represent Sudan in next year’s Orange CAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, Al Mourada, considered the third force of Sudanese football after Merrikh and Hilal have been relegated from the top flight. The 1968 league champions are certain to finish amongst the bottom three clubs of the 14-club league and thus, bid farewell to the elite division for the first time in their history.
