MetaMask, in collaboration with Blockaid, a prominent web3 security provider, has unveiled a groundbreaking security feature that will revolutionize the way users interact with the web3 ecosystem. This innovative security alert system is designed to proactively prevent malicious transactions, safeguard users against scams, phishing attempts, and hacks, all while preserving their privacy.
This significant development marks a watershed moment in the world of decentralized finance and self-custody web3 wallets. MetaMask, developed by Consensys, has consistently been at the forefront of innovation in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space. Partnering with Blockaid, they have taken a bold step towards enhancing user security without compromising their privacy.
The privacy-preserving security alerts, set to launch officially on October 31st, 2023, are set to be made available to all desktop users under the MetaMask experimental setting. The feature will also be introduced to the MetaMask mobile app in November. By the first quarter of 2024, this pioneering feature will be seamlessly integrated and enabled by default for all MetaMask users, ensuring that a vast user base can benefit from this enhanced security.

MetaMask and Blockaid have set a new industry standard by developing a unique privacy-preserving module that simulates transactions without the need to share transaction data and signature requests with third parties. Unlike most web3 wallets that rely on external validation from third parties, MetaMask’s innovative approach prioritizes user privacy.
Dan Finlay, Co-Founder of MetaMask and Chief Ethos Officer at Consensys, emphasizes the importance of preserving user privacy in the web3 ecosystem. He stated, “Privacy is a core value of web3 and should not need to be sacrificed to improve usability. Instead, it should be a guiding principle in the development of solutions to improve the space. As we continue to innovate, we remain committed to empowering users and providing them with the tools they need to navigate the world of web3 with confidence.”
Blockaid’s proactive approach to security has already demonstrated its effectiveness. In a high-profile case involving a hack of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s X account, Blockaid successfully prevented over $100,000 worth of assets from being stolen. Similar scams targeting other high-profile individuals have also been thwarted by Blockaid, underscoring the value of such security measures in the web3 landscape.
The web3 ecosystem is continuously evolving, with thousands of new decentralized applications (dapps) emerging daily. Unfortunately, a significant percentage of these dapps are malicious, posing a threat to users’ assets and privacy. Security alerts that can proactively stop malicious transactions are critical in safeguarding users against scams, phishing attempts, and hacks.
A survey commissioned by Consensys revealed that 52% of Nigerian respondents cited “too many scams” as one of the primary barriers to entering the crypto ecosystem. This highlights the significance of enhancing user safety to promote broader adoption of web3 technologies.
The success of the experimental Opensea security alerts, introduced in April 2023, serves as a testament to the effectiveness of these security measures. This opt-in feature was adopted by an average of 4% of MetaMask users and prevented asset theft valued at $500 million through the identification and prevention of malicious transactions. With the new privacy-preserving security alerts becoming a default setting for MetaMask wallets, it is anticipated that they will prevent the loss of assets worth billions of dollars.
Ido Ben-Natan, Co-founder and CEO of Blockaid, emphasized the importance of enhancing web3 security to prepare for the next billion users. He stated, “For the ecosystem to be ready for billions of users, it needs to be safer. We’re excited to be working with MetaMask on leading the charge in defining how a wallet should defend its users. Together we are setting the standard for web3 security across users and builders in the space.”
In addition to the new security alerts, MetaMask continues to cater to the needs of advanced users by offering MetaMask Snaps, which include a Transaction Insights category. These Snaps allow users to further enhance their security by installing additional layers of protection. The new security alerts are designed to complement the existing Transaction Insights Snaps, creating a multi-layered approach to user security.
While MetaMask and Blockaid’s partnership is a significant step in improving security within the web3 ecosystem, education remains a crucial component of ensuring that users can interact with this technology safely and confidently. In January 2023, MetaMask launched MetaMask Learn, a platform designed to provide users with a comprehensive understanding of web3 concepts and self-custody wallets.
MetaMask Learn integrates visual learning methods with practical testing, offering users a thorough and engaging approach to navigating the complexities of the web3 landscape. One of the key modules focuses on security, educating users on how to identify malicious activity and keep their assets safe.
As the world of web3 continues to expand and evolve, MetaMask’s commitment to user safety and education remains unwavering. The integration of privacy-preserving security alerts, combined with the ongoing efforts to empower users with knowledge and tools, is set to make the web3 ecosystem safer and more accessible to users around the globe.
