The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has called for the appointment of a Muslim as the new deputy governor of Ondo State following Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s assumption of office as the substantive governor.
In a statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, and the Ondo State Coordinator, Alhaji Ali Abdul-Yekeen, the group advised Governor Aiyedatiwa to select a Muslim deputy governor from Ondo North Senatorial District, particularly Owo, the hometown of the late Rotimi Akeredolu.
The group emphasized that this move would promote inclusivity, equality, justice, and fairness in governance.

Citing past administrations in the state, including the military, the MMWG highlighted the historical appointment of Muslim deputy governors and stressed that repeating such a gesture would foster religious tolerance, peace, stability, and progress in Ondo State.
The group also drew attention to the example of Ekiti State, where both the governor and deputy are Christians, but a Muslim was appointed as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
It cautioned against the concentration of top political offices in the hands of a single religious group, describing it as unfair and unjust.
The MMWG urged leaders to consider religious balance in appointments as a means of promoting peace, citing Lagos, Osun, Ogun, and Oyo States as models for Governor Aiyedatiwa to emulate in fostering mutual understanding.
The MMWG’s call reflects its commitment to advocating for religious balance and inclusivity in governance, especially in the context of leadership transitions.
It underscores the group’s belief that such appointments can contribute to the promotion of peace and harmony within the state.
