Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has cautioned the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that political realities in Nigeria could make it nearly impossible to fulfil a one-term presidency pledge.
Obi has consistently reiterated his willingness to serve only one term if elected in 2027. However, speaking on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme, on Friday, Governor Sule advised Obi and other aspirants not to underestimate the complexities of governance in the country.

According to Sule, while a president may come into office with the intention of serving only a short tenure, the realities of political power and entrenched interests often alter such plans.
“Peter Obi might say he wants to do one term, but it is not up to him,” Sule stated.
“Once he assumes office, powerful interests will pressure him, saying, ‘It’s our turn; you cannot do that to us,’ ‘we cannot allow you to do that,’ and ‘we will take you to court if you do that.’”
The governor stressed that Nigeria’s challenges are so vast that even four years in office might not be sufficient to address them meaningfully, noting that political pressures and the push for continuity are almost inevitable for any president.
