NLC Criticizes Fresh Petrol Price Hike, Calls FG Insensitive

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the recent increase in petrol prices, describing the move as a display of insensitivity by the Federal Government. The hike, which has sparked widespread concern, comes at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with rising living costs and economic challenges.

In a statement, the NLC expressed disappointment, arguing that the decision to raise fuel prices without providing adequate palliatives or alternatives places undue hardship on citizens. The labor body emphasized that the rising cost of petrol directly impacts transportation, food prices, and other essential goods, worsening the plight of the average Nigerian.

“This hike is not only untimely but also unfair to millions of Nigerians already struggling to make ends meet. The government must prioritize the welfare of its people over policies that exacerbate poverty,” the NLC stated.

The Congress also accused the government of failing to fulfill its promises of mitigating the effects of subsidy removal. According to the NLC, measures such as investments in public transportation and increased local refining capacity have not been implemented as pledged, leaving Nigerians bearing the brunt of the policy.

Public outcry over the price hike has been swift, with many calling for a reversal or immediate intervention to cushion the effects. Civil society groups have also joined the NLC in urging the government to explore alternative strategies for revenue generation that do not disproportionately affect the masses.

In response, government representatives have defended the price adjustment, citing global oil market fluctuations and the need to align with deregulation policies. They assured citizens that efforts are underway to address the economic challenges and improve living standards.

The NLC, however, remains unconvinced, insisting that the government must take immediate steps to alleviate the burden on Nigerians. The labor union has hinted at potential protests if swift action is not taken to address their concerns.
