A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has cautioned the National Assembly against plans to move the 2027 general elections to 2026, describing the move as ill-advised and potentially disruptive.
Oguntoyinbo issued the warning in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, urging lawmakers to reconsider the proposal, which he said could undermine the nation’s democratic process.
The NNPP stalwart stressed that shifting the election date would place unnecessary pressure on key stakeholders, including political parties, aspiring candidates, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“I urge the National Assembly not to move the 2027 elections to 2026. Election is a serious and important issue for national development. We don’t need to rush the political parties, the intending candidates, and the INEC into preparations,” Oguntoyinbo stated.
He explained that credible elections require adequate planning, logistics, and funding, noting that political parties need time to recruit and prepare candidates, while candidates themselves must have sufficient time to plan and engage with the electorate.
According to him, rushing the process could result in poor organization and weaken governance, as the country would be “in a perpetual election mode.”
“The National Assembly should be cautious of the severe negative implications of bringing the 2027 election forward to 2026,” Oguntoyinbo warned.
