Nyesom Wike, former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reiterated his allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite facing threats of expulsion from the party.
Wike’s rift with the PDP leadership stemmed from disagreements during the 2023 presidential election, where he advocated for the party to adhere to its internal power-sharing formula by zoning the presidential ticket to southern Nigeria.
His stance led him to work against the PDP’s candidate, aligning himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and supporting the emergence of President Bola Tinubu.
During a media parley with selected journalists in Abuja, Wike affirmed his PDP membership, stating, “I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Have you ever seen me change anything?” Despite his absence from major PDP meetings and recent off-cycle election campaigns, Wike remains resolute in his decision, emphasizing that he has taken a break and everyone should “carry their cross.”
Wike’s unwavering stance underscores the complexities within the PDP and highlights the challenges of internal party dynamics, particularly in the context of power struggles and differing political ideologies.
