A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayekooto Akindele, has declared that the proposed coalition of opposition political parties stands no chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu in 2027, asserting that the earliest Tinubu could be retired from politics would be in 2031.
Akindele made the statement in response to recent comments by Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who revealed that former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) are in talks to join the SDP.
Adebayo had said that if Atiku, Obi, and other political heavyweights join forces under the SDP and abide by its internal democratic culture, they would successfully unseat Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 general elections.

Reacting via a Facebook post, Akindele dismissed the possibility of an opposition victory in 2027 and mocked Atiku and Obi as “politically homeless,” unlike Tinubu who, he said, would return to his political base in Lagos after leaving office.
“We will retire Tinubu to Lagos – SDP. Yes, in 2031,” Akindele wrote.
He continued: “What I love most about this statement is Tinubu and Lagos. When Obi retired as Anambra Governor, he didn’t retire to Anambra, he came to Lagos. When Waziri Adamawa (Atiku) retired as VP, he didn’t retire to Adamawa but Abuja.
When GEJ retired, he went to Bayelsa. When OBJ retired, he went to Ogun. When Buhari retired, he went to Katsina. Osinbajo relocated to Ikenne. Obviously, in 2031, Tinubu will go to Lagos. Shame on Obi and Atiku, they’re politically homeless.”
The remarks come amid rising speculation of political realignment as opposition figures explore new platforms ahead of the next general elections.
