Former All Progressives Congress (APC) North-West Vice Chairman, Salihu Lukman, has disclosed that discussions on forming a unified opposition party to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 general elections are at an advanced stage.
Lukman made the revelation on Monday while reacting to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent statement that opposition leaders were working towards a coalition to take on the APC in the next election.
He noted that Abubakar’s remarks had sparked intense national debate, adding that while no final decisions had been made, consultations were progressing steadily.

According to him, the primary focus of the talks is securing a commitment from opposition leaders to work together, even if it requires setting aside personal ambitions for 2027.
A key aspect of the discussions, Lukman revealed, is determining which political party will serve as the coalition’s platform.
While zoning concerns have been raised by some leaders, he dismissed reports suggesting that disagreements were stalling the process.
He also disclosed that some coalition members had attempted to register new political parties but faced resistance from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Furthermore, several smaller parties that failed to win any seats in the last election risk de-registration, limiting the coalition’s options.
Lukman warned that delaying the coalition’s formation could lead to a one-party system, effectively eliminating any serious opposition to the APC in 2027.
He urged Nigerians to recognize the urgency of the situation, stressing that failure to act swiftly could result in a political landscape where the ruling party remains unchallenged.
