Pius Ashakia, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has secured victory in the recently concluded rerun election for the Obanliku state constituency, held on February 3, 2024. Ashakia clinched the win with a total of 275 votes.
The election results from the two polling units, Bebuenkanyang and Bayaga, located in Bisu ward, where the rerun took place, revealed that Ashakia defeated his opponent, Sunday Achunekang of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 243 votes.
Dr. Blessing Anyalebechi, representing the Cross River State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Gabriel Yomere, officially declared the results of the by-election.
She noted that the results from the 2023 general election were merged with those of the recent by-election.
“In accordance with the relevant sections of the law and the Electoral Act, I, Dr. Blessing Anyalebechi, having duly certified these results, declare that the candidate for the All Progressives Congress, Sunday Achunekang, obtained 10,437 votes, while Pius Ashakia of the Peoples Democratic Party secured 10,587 votes.
Therefore, Pius Ashakia of the PDP, having met all legal requirements, is hereby declared the winner and duly elected on this day, February 3, 2024,” she announced.
