The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has called on the Speaker of the State House of Assembly to immediately lift the suspension imposed on 13 lawmakers who opposed the alleged removal of the Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambwese.
The party made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom. It described the suspension as “unwarranted and unjust,” stressing that it has effectively denied nearly two million Benue citizens their right to representation in the Assembly.
“The suspension constitutes a blatant affront to the democratic principles that underpin our governance and our collective commitment to democracy,” the statement read.

According to the PDP, the affected lawmakers demonstrated “patriotic resolve” by standing against what it termed legislative misconduct and rascality during the controversial February plenary session.
The party also accused the Executive arm of orchestrating the removal of Justice Ikpambwese and condemned what it described as a growing trend of dictatorship and suppression in the state.
“The Speaker and the Governor should recognize that Nigeria is not under a military regime. Democracy thrives when diverse opinions and dissenting voices are respected and allowed to flourish,” the statement added.
The PDP further lamented that judicial institutions across the country have condemned the Assembly’s actions, yet the 13 lawmakers continue to suffer for defending democratic values.
“The PDP demands the immediate reinstatement of the suspended members to restore democracy, ensure proper representation, and uphold justice for the people of Benue State,” the statement concluded.
