The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has cautioned the Senate President, Godswil Akpabio, to be mindful of his statements to avoid escalating the already tense political climate in the state.
Tambari Sydney Gbara, the party’s publicity secretary in Rivers, criticized Akpabio’s recent remarks at an event in Port Harcourt.
Akpabio had appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to consider a candidate from the Ogoni ethnic group to succeed Governor Siminialayi Fubara.

While acknowledging the importance of the Ogoni governorship project, Tambari stated that Akpabio’s timing was inappropriate given the current political climate and the distance to the election.
He emphasized Governor Fubara’s strong support among the Ogoni people and highlighted Fubara’s development efforts in Bori town, the Ogoni headquarters, including road construction and other community projects.
Tambari emphasized that as a prominent leader in the South-South region, Akpabio should make statements that promote peace in the state, rather than ones that could inflame tensions.
He criticized Akpabio for his comments, which he deemed disrespectful to the sitting governor, and suggested that Akpabio should remember how he would have felt if similar comments were made during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
