Two major political parties in Jigawa State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC), have signed a peace accord in preparation for the upcoming rerun election in the Buji/Birnin Kudu Federal Constituency.
The peace accord, organized by the Jigawa State Police Command, aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the rerun election for Saturday, February 3, 2024.
The decision for a rerun election follows the declaration of the February 25, 2023, election for the Birnin Kudu/Buji federal constituency as inconclusive by the election tribunal in Dutse, Jigawa State.

The Court of Appeal subsequently affirmed the tribunal’s judgement.
In the initial election, INEC had announced the PDP candidate, Adamu Yakubu, as the winner with 39,998 votes, defeating the APC candidate, Magaji Da’u, who garnered 36,735 votes.
Speaking on the preparations for the rerun election, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, A.T. Abdullahi, emphasized the commitment of the police force to maintain peace and security.
He warned against any attempts to disrupt the electoral process, stating that the police would deal decisively with anyone found causing chaos before, during, or after the election.
Furthermore, the Commissioner assured the political parties that the police force would remain neutral and non-partisan, ensuring a fair and level playing field for all participants in the upcoming election.
