The ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government’s emergency meeting, which was convened by President Bola Tinubu in his capacity as Chairman, may have been inspired by the political unrest seen in the Republic of Niger.
The meeting will take place on Sunday in Abuja, according to a brief statement distributed on Friday by Dele Alake, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communication, and Strategy.
ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government Chairman President Bola Tinubu will host a special meeting of the regional leaders on Sunday, July 30, in Abuja, according to Alake, who first announced the news. “Following the coup in the Republic of Niger that has upended the constitutional political leadership in the West African country,” Alake said.

Initially, Tinubu had denounced the existing political climate in the neighbouring nation and said that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything in their power to safeguard democracy and guarantee that it firmly established itself in the sub-region.
Additionally, he had ordered Patrice Talon, the president of the Republic of Benin, to travel to Niger and learn about the military coup there.
In the meantime, President Tinubu received separate phone calls on Thursday evening from US Vice President Kamala Harris and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in which they both reaffirmed their support for ECOWAS and the Nigerian leader’s efforts to restore constitutional order in the Niger Republic.
