Ramsay Bolton’s Death Was Originally Too Terrible To Air – Imagine Engine

On the ninth episode of “Game of Thrones” season six, Jon Snow fought Ramsay Bolton to reclaim Winterfell, alongside his sister, Sansa Stark.

In the episode titled “Battle of the Bastards,” Snow finally faced off with Bolton in a battle. After Bolton was beaten, pounded and grounded by Snow, he was left for Sansa to get her revenge, which she did by releasing his own starved hounds on him. His dogs ate him up, starting with his face.

Imagine Engine, the company that created the gory scene, revealed that it was intended to be gorier.

“They shot the scene with multiple takes,” said Image Engine visual effects supervisor Mat Krentz to Variety. “They did a pass of the dog on green screen, then Ramsay on green screen, and then we also had a background plate, which we put together.”

According to him, artists created a CG jaw for Bolton, and animated it to reveal the flesh ripping between Ramsay’s skin and gums. The effect was too gruesome that they pulled it back a bit, using a 2D composite instead.

Iwan Rheon, who played Bolton for four seasons on the show, spoke to Entertainment Weekly after his character was killed off.

“I think it’s kind of right he goes down,” Rheon said. “Because what else is he going to do after this? He’s done so many things. It’s justified and it’s the right thing to do. It’s the right path.”

On “Game of Thrones,” Bolton once hunted an innocent girl named Tansy. He killed her by releasing his hunting dogs to rip her to pieces.

In season six, the villain killed his stepmother, and his newborn half-brother by sending out his dogs to feed on them.

Iwan’s character has been described as the most evil villain on TV.
