An elder statesman in Rivers State, Bernard Mikko, has defended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, describing the move as necessary for self-preservation, political protection and the overall interest of the state.
Mikko spoke during an interview with journalists on Wednesday, where he said the governor’s defection did not come as a surprise, given what he described as the collapse of the PDP as a viable political platform in Rivers State and across the southern region.
According to him, prevailing political realities in Rivers State and Nigeria often compel leaders to align with political parties capable of protecting their mandates and supporting effective governance.

Mikko said Fubara’s decision was a rational response to the PDP’s inability to protect its members or enforce internal discipline.
“The political environment demands that leaders make strategic choices. Governor Fubara’s move reflects a practical approach to ensuring stability, effective governance and the welfare of the people of Rivers State,” he said.
He argued that the PDP had steadily weakened since the end of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, adding that internal crises had eroded the party’s strength and cohesion.
“The party became so weak immediately after the end of President Jonathan’s tenure. Since then, members have acted with brazen impunity, and the party has turned into a franchise for trading all sorts of interests,” Mikko said.
The elder statesman maintained that Fubara’s defection was not driven by personal ambition but by the need to guarantee stability in Rivers State and safeguard his ability to govern effectively.
“I think he is right. Rivers people are happy that Fubara has negotiated his way into a stronger platform that can offer the kind of protection the state needs. It is not about him alone,” he said.
Mikko further stated that the governor’s decision was informed by intelligence and security considerations.
“In politics, the most important thing is to align yourself with where you will be safe. As the chief executive of the state, he understands this perfectly. He sees security reports and knows what is happening,” he added.
