A gathering of Rivers State elders and leaders, led by former governor Rufus Ada-George, expressed deep concern over the attempted impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the defection of 27 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The elders conveyed their disapproval in a communique issued after an emergency meeting on Sunday in Port Harcourt.
The communique, signed by Ada-George, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, and 12 others, lamented the lack of response from Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to letters seeking an audience regarding the escalating political crisis in the state.

The elders found the unfolding events in Rivers State both embarrassing and perilous, referencing the October 29, 2023, explosion at the House of Assembly Complex and the alleged attack on Governor Fubara by security agents on October 30, 2023.
Part of the communique read, “The Forum regretted that neither Governor Siminialayi Fubara nor Chief Nyesom Wike responded to our letters seeking for an audience with each of them.
The attempt to impeach the Governor of Rivers State barely about six months in office without explaining to the good people of the state the reasons and infractions of law is unacceptable.”
The Forum strongly condemned all forms of violence and lawlessness in Rivers State, calling for a thorough investigation into the crisis and the prosecution of those found responsible.
Additionally, the elders urged President Bola Tinubu to build on his earlier intervention, emphasizing that the repercussions of inaction could extend beyond Rivers State to affect the entire Niger Delta region and the Federal Government.
As the political landscape in Rivers State remains tense, the elders’ stance adds a significant voice to the ongoing discussions surrounding the state’s governance and stability.
