The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced the appointment of new national officers as part of its strategic restructuring to strengthen internal operations and enhance preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Thursday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the appointments were approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) following a recent meeting chaired by the National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.
Aiyenigba stated that the decision to fill the vacant positions was taken in line with the provisions of the SDP Constitution and the mandate given to the NWC by the party’s National Convention.

“This restructuring is in line with the provisions of the SDP Constitution and the mandate given to the NWC by the National Convention,” he said. “It is a strategic move to fortify the party’s leadership base as we gear up for the 2027 elections.”
Among those appointed are Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman (South), Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar as Deputy National Chairman (North), and Mr. Hussani Ado Bello as National Financial Secretary.
Senator Uba, a veteran politician from Anambra State, previously served as Director-General and Commissioner under the SDP-led government of the late Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife in 1992. He was also a member of the Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS) during the Babangida administration.
Professor Abubakar, from Gombe State, is an academic and statistician with a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Development. He was the pioneer National Secretary of the SDP (2010–2015), the party’s 2011 governorship candidate in Gombe State, and the first Director-General of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Nigeria.
Mr. Bello, a chartered accountant and finance consultant from Kano State, is a retired civil servant. He served as the SDP Kano State Chairman in 2018, Organising Secretary of IPAC in 2019, and Chairman of the Forum of SDP State Chairmen in 2020.
Aiyenigba noted that the appointments, effective from May 15, 2025, were based on the appointees’ experience, loyalty, and capacity to drive the party’s vision forward.
“These appointments reflect our commitment to inclusive and effective leadership that will drive the party forward,” he said.
