Former presidential adviser Sen. Babafemi Ojudu, CON, has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reported declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, warning of its political, economic, and security repercussions.
In a press statement, Ojudu questioned the rationale behind the decision, calling it a reckless and unnecessary move driven by poor counsel. He argued that the crisis in Rivers State is a political dispute that requires dialogue, not drastic intervention.
Economic Implications

Ojudu cautioned that escalating tensions in the Niger Delta could cripple oil production, recalling that political conflicts in the region previously pushed Nigeria into recession under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“At one point, Nigeria’s oil production collapsed from 2.5 million barrels per day to below 400,000 barrels per day due to political mismanagement. This decision threatens to undo years of stabilization efforts,” he warned.
He further stated that instability in the oil sector could lead to renewed pipeline sabotage, illegal oil bunkering, and militant activity, all of which could severely impact Nigeria’s economic survival.
Security Concerns
The former senator also raised concerns about Nigeria’s overstretched military, arguing that the focus should be on ongoing battles against insurgents, bandits, and kidnappers in the North East, North West, and North Central regions.
“Our armed forces do not need yet another crisis to divert resources and attention. Nigeria cannot afford to be fighting on multiple fronts—politically, economically, and militarily,” he stated.
Call for Reconsideration
Ojudu described the state of emergency as an admission of failure rather than a solution, urging President Tinubu to reverse the decision before it causes irreparable damage to his administration and the country.
“This is not the way to manage this crisis, Mr. President. A state of emergency is not a strategy—it is a disaster in the making.”
He called for constructive political engagement to resolve the dispute, emphasizing that a forceful takeover of governance in Rivers State is not in Nigeria’s best interest.
