Former Nigerian senator, Shehu Sani, has linked the recent surge in terrorist attacks in northern parts of the country to the approaching general elections.
Sani made the assertion in a post on X while reacting to the increasing wave of violence in some northern states, particularly Borno State, where terrorists have reportedly intensified attacks on communities.

He observed that the decade-long security crisis in the region often worsens during election periods.
“Each time the election season is upon us, bandits and terrorists in the North heighten their attacks,” he said.
The former lawmaker described the development as condemnable, regardless of the motives behind the attacks.
“Whatever their motive or intention for this calculated upsurge, it’s condemnable,” he added.
Sani also questioned the justification often given by perpetrators of such violence, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
“They kidnap and murder their fellow Muslims in the holy month of Ramadan and claim to be fighting a religious cause,” he said.
He called on religious leaders to take a firm stance against the violence, urging clerics to speak out against the perpetrators.
“Our clerics must muster the courage to rebuke these evil forces,” Sani stated.
