The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has launched a Product Identification Scheme aimed at curbing the proliferation of substandard goods in the Nigerian market. The initiative is designed to enhance product traceability, protect consumers from counterfeit items, and ensure compliance with national quality standards.
Under the new scheme, manufacturers and importers will be required to register their products with SON and obtain unique identification codes. These codes will allow consumers, regulators, and stakeholders to verify the authenticity of goods through a digital platform. The move is expected to strengthen quality control measures across various industries, particularly in sectors prone to counterfeiting, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and building materials.

SON officials emphasized that the scheme would improve consumer confidence by providing a transparent system for checking product authenticity before purchase. The organization also noted that it would collaborate with industry stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation process, encouraging businesses to comply with the new regulations.
Counterfeit products have been a persistent challenge in Nigeria, leading to economic losses and safety risks for consumers. With the introduction of the Product Identification Scheme, SON aims to create a more structured market environment where only certified goods are sold, ultimately reducing the presence of substandard and hazardous items.
Industry players have welcomed the initiative, noting that it will help protect reputable brands and manufacturers from unfair competition posed by fake products. However, some concerns have been raised regarding the ease of compliance, particularly for small businesses that may struggle with registration requirements. SON has assured stakeholders that it will provide necessary support and awareness programs to facilitate a seamless transition.
As the scheme takes effect, Nigerian consumers and businesses will be encouraged to verify products using the identification system, reinforcing efforts to promote quality assurance and regulatory compliance nationwide.
