Mamelodi Sundowns have clinched the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) title for the sixth time.
With a game to spare, ‘The Brazilians’ snapped the title after a 3-0 thrashing of former champions, SuperSport United in the penultimate encounter of the season on Tuesday (6 May 2014).
Second-half strikes from Surprise Moriri, Teko Modise and Cuthbert Malajila in Pretoria took the championship race beyond holders Kaizer Chiefs, despite managing a lone goal win away at Pretoria University. Sundowns are now on 64 points, four points richer than Kaizer Chiefs.
Previous winners in 1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/2000, 2005/06 and 2006/07, Sundowns will represent South Africa in next year’s CAF Champions League.
The league triumph will serve a huge relief for head coach Pitso Mosimane, after a failed stint at the helm of Bafana Bafana from 2010-2012.
