Ex Super Eagles player, Mutiu Adepoju has said Super Eagles must be able to surprise their opponents if they want to go all the way at AFCON 2019.
Nigeria started their 2019 AFCON tournament with a difficult 1-0 over Burundi in Alexandria on Saturday, with Odion Ighalo netting with a tidy strike from Ola Aina’s beautiful assist after Daniel Akpeyi saved twice to prevent Burundi from taking the lead.
Mutiu who feels there are no more small teams in Africa also said Super Eagles must do away with being too predictable with the way they play.
His words, “You know there are no longer minnows in African football, so we have to respect the Burundi team and others.
“I commend the boys for a job well done. But going forward I think we need faster transition from defence to midfield and attack.
“We need to have the ability to surprise our opponents and not to be very predictable.”
Nigeria is set to face Guinea on Wednesday in their next match in the group.
