The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has issued a statement condemning the security situation in the country’s North Central area and demanding action from the country’s security services.
After the kidnapping of Benue State’s Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Matthew Abo, NUJ Zone D President Chris Atsaka issued the following statement.
Abo’s hometown in the Ukum local government area of Benue State is where he was allegedly abducted by gunmen.
The NUJ writer denounced the Commissioner’s kidnapping and the persistent instability in the area.
He voiced concern that the government and security forces have not done enough to end the rising wave of violence in the North Central geopolitical zone.
Atsaka bemoaned the increase in kidnappings, robberies, and other criminal acts, calling on the government and security forces to step up their efforts to protect the populace.
He said that the prolonged herdsmen/farmers problem in the states of Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa is preventing economic growth in the region, and he also condemned the activities of bandits in Niger State.
The Vice President expressed his condolences to the affected populations and governments and urged swift efforts to return the areas to normalcy.
