Three key members of the Labour Party (LP) in Enugu State have officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing internal crises within their former party and the performance of Governor Peter Mbah as key reasons for their decision.
Leading the wave of defections was Hon. Dennis Agbo, a two-term member of the House of Representatives representing Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency.
Agbo announced his return to the PDP on Wednesday, highlighting Governor Mbah’s “outstanding performance,” the LP’s internal disarray, and the calls of his constituents as motivating factors.

“The performance of the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Dr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah, since inauguration has been nothing short of outstanding,” Agbo said.
“In deference to the popular wishes of the highly enterprising people of Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, I have decided to resign my membership of the Labour Party and return to the PDP.”
He stressed that aligning with the state government would enhance synergy and bring greater development to his constituency.
Following Agbo’s move, Hon. Chidi Obetta, a first-time member of the House of Representatives representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, also announced his defection on Thursday.
Hon. Malachi Okey Onyechi, who represents Nsukka West State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, similarly confirmed his departure from the LP and rejoining of the PDP.
Their defection was confirmed by Hon. Dan Nwomeh, media aide to Governor Peter Mbah. In a statement, he said: “Happening now at the State PDP Headquarters: Three National and State Assembly Members rejoining PDP from LP. They are Rt. Hon. Dennis Agbo, Hon. Mark Chidi Obetta, and Hon. Malachi Okey Onyechi.”
The defection of the three lawmakers marks a significant political shift in Enugu, as the PDP continues to consolidate power in the state.
