Popular highlife legend Bright Chimezie has come out to blast the lyrical quality of today’s music compared to songs by the older generation of artists. He recently revealed that most Nigerian songs lack meaningful lyrics nowadays.
Speaking on a recent episode of the CreativTea podcast, the veteran singer shared that several contemporary artists mainly concentrate on rhythm and commercial appeal, neglecting sensible lyrics that the listeners can learn from.

According to him, even though music is more profitable for the current generation of artists, he and his peers passed better messages with their songs.
“Music is more profitable now than it was in my time. The only problem I have with today’s artists is their lyrical content. In terms of rhythm and production, they’re doing well. But what message are they passing to society?” he said.
Recalling his 1984 classic “Respect Africa,” Bright Chimezie noted that he remains proud of the song’s lyrics 40 years later.
Commending the creativity and success of today’s artists, he maintained that passing quality messages through your music guarantees a lasting impact.
“I can look back at what I did then and still hold my head high because of the lyrics.
When your music is 40 years old, can you sit with your children, watch yourself, and be proud of your lyrics? That is the real test,” he added.
