There are unconfirmed reports that Nigerians (including actress Toyin Aimakhu) were fooled into saving the life of ovarian cancer patient Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat.
Last week Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat became a trending figure on social media as her medical plight- stage IV ovarian cancer went viral. Moved by her story actress Toyin Aimakhu visited Mayowa and helped solicit for funds for her to be treated abroad.
The actress put up photos of her with Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat and asked Nigerians to donate to her so that she could seek medical treatment abroad. Toyin Aimakhu made this passionate plea on July 25, 2016 on her Instagram account.
“This is Mayowa. I don’t know her. I have never met her. The only thing I know about her is that she is my fan. I am an actress and I believe this is the time to use my voice. We need your help” said Toyin Aimakhu.
In the Instagram video she further said “I’m going to use my voice. She is my fan. This is the first time I am seeing her. She is young, she is pretty…” Toyin Aimakhu then consoled Mayowa who started crying in the video.
Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat needed thirty-two million Naira for her supposed treatment abroad. In an inspiring sweep of compassion thousands of Nigeria donated to save Mayowa’s life and before the end of the day the monetary goal was reached.
There are now counter reports suggesting that the campaign was orchestrated by Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat’s family to deceive Nigerians. According to popular blogger Linda Ikeji, doctors at LUTH had already told Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat’s family that her case was beyond treatment. She has stage IV cancer which is regarded as too advanced to be treated.
Despite this prognosis, the family went ahead to raise funds for her. Doctors in LUTH reportedly also did not give the family of Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat any medical report which they could use to help her seek for treatment abroad.
Linda Ikeji reports that Toyin Aimakhu who played a pivotal role in raising awareness stormed LUTH with police officers today and some people went to Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat’s family home only to find it locked.
To confirm this story Theinfostride has gone to LUTH to investigate the true nature of the events surrounding Ahmed Mayowa Shukurat health. We will keep you updated shortly.
