Manchester United boss David Moyes and his coaching team have this week been scouring Europe to find a central midfielder who is capable of solving the Premier League champions’ problem position.
.
The Red Devils have been linked with several top midfielders over the past couple of months – with the likes of Koke, Ilkay Gundogan and Paul Pogba all linked with a move to Old Trafford.
.
Manchester United lost the latter of the aforementioned players because they failed to tie him down to a long-term contract and ensure that he would get some first-team football under his belt.
.
The north-west club are now scurrying desperately to try and tempt Pogba back to Old Trafford as they have realised that he is exactly what they need to turn them back into a title-winning side.
.
Manchester United trio Marouane Fellaini, Tom Cleverley and Anderson have all tried to make the void left by Paul Scholes their own – but have failed miserably.
.
Fellaini has started his Manchester United off in terrible fashion, Cleverley is average at best and Anderson is finally heading for the Old Trafford exit door, after dodging the boot for the last three seasons.
.
However Manchester United do have a player who is more than capable of spraying the ball around and scoring the odd goal or two on their books in the form of Nick Powell.
.
Sir Alex Ferguson signed Powell back in June 2012 in hope that the then Crewe Alexandra starlet would eventually transform into a Manchester United and England great.
.
Powell has all the qualities to follow Scholes’ path and is at the perfect club to live up to his potential.
.
The 19-year-old, who is capable of playing in midfield or in attack, has been a revelation at Wigan Athletic so far this season.
.
Powell has scored five goals and claimed two assists in 19 Championship games for the Latics during the five months he has been on loan at the DW Stadium.
.
The aforementioned statistics are proof that he has taken to the Championship like a duck to water and is more than capable of plying his trade at a higher level.
.
Manchester United could choose to loan him out to a Premier League side – but it would make more sense for Moyes to keep him at Old Trafford if he cannot entice one of Europe’s top midfielder to the club.
.
I’m not saying Powell is the complete product and is the ready-made replacement for Scholes at this moment of time – but he is worth a punt and he needs to play games for Manchester United otherwise he could end up leaving the club in a similar fashion to what Pogba did in 2012.
