Wizkid is out with the official version of his single ‘Come Closer’, which features Drake. The new song was released on Friday, March 31, 2017, across all official channels, and digital stores.
The song was earlier leaked in the year, but it was mopped up from the internet by Sony Music who owned the copyright of the song.
The official version has been made public, and there’s just a little difference between the leaked version and this new one. It has been cleaned, mixed and mastered right. But its form and arrangement is still intact.
On newly released song, the Caribbean vibe is on again, with Wizkid owning the riddims from the moment he opens up his mouth.
“Came into the game, no one replace me/Mi love mine and she straight with no chaser/I love my guys, know mi all about mi paper/Mi got mi girls all around me, mi no chaser, yah/Starboy, call me number one/When mi tune drop, the girls, they bounce along/Mi no like nothing come between me and mi paper/So when mi come inna di place, mi undertaker,” he rhymes.
Drake too continues where he left off on the “Views” album and “More Life” playlist. He is all reggaeton and chill on the record. “Too mix up in drama to go outside/Too mix up in drama to free my mind/Jealous people around me, I need to change my life/I just turn colder every time I try/What would I do without you, my chargi?/I don’t feel that way with anybody/Tell me your secrets, I’m not messy/Steady it for me, girl, hold steady,” he spits.
This isn’t the Nigerian vibe that many expect the singer to carry across the Atlantic and into various markets. Instead the man is sticking to an already established template of Island music – something that Americans enjoy – and selling it.
It’s culture appropriation. But it sits perfectly well with Drake, whose expansive strategy of making music has made him the biggest pop star on the globe. This is a slow radio hit, released right on time for the approaching summer.
It marks the first step for a Wizkid project in 2017. When a similar collaboration happened in 2016, it formed the bedrock for the “Views” album. The project was phenomenal, smashing all known records at the time.
It’s Wizkid’s turn this year, and earlier moves have proven to set it up so nicely. He has concluded on a multi-award deal with RCA Records, with a tentative release date set for July. New songs are being recorded, and the videos are next in line to drop.
The new song will be plugged into the RCA Records promotional machinery, fed to radio around the world, and everywhere else.
Starboy is set for the takeover. ‘Come closer’ to success.
