On Monday, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike criticized the European Union (EU) for its assessment on Nigeria’s presidential election in 2023.
Wike claimed the report misled voters in Rivers State and the rest of the country by distorting the reality of the most recent election.
During a business visit with EU ambassador to Nigeria Samuela Isopi, Wike voiced his displeasure.

The minister claimed that the European Union had been tasked with acting as an impartial observer during the most recent election, not producing a report that would misrepresent the state of democracy in Nigeria.
Chief Observer Barry Andres presented the final report from the European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) to the Nigerian government in June. The study focused on six key areas and made a number of suggestions.
Wike, on the other hand, argued that environmental differences necessitated a departure from EU law in Nigeria.
When asked about the European Union’s most recent report on the election in Nigeria, he remarked, “I didn’t agree with the European Union.”
“Let them watch. Nigerian law cannot be identical to European Union law due to environmental differences.
The European Union’s report on the situation in Rivers State differed from the facts on the ground. How is it that democratic idealists and practitioners can be accused of ignorance?
Improved economic growth should be our primary focus. We need to work together and reach consensus on how to best advance the Federal Capital Territory and the nation as a whole.
It is important for foreign partners to care about strategic development in all sectors.
Samuela Isopi has responded by saying that the study was written by objective third parties and has nothing to do with her business dealings.
She vowed to collaborate with the minister to further the territory’s progress.
