Human rights activist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its proposed use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the collation of results for the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu expressed her opposition in a video shared on X, arguing that the electoral body should not rely on AI for the process.

“INEC has no business using AI for the 2027 election. Companies are still reeling from the repercussions of CAC dabbling in AI,” she said.
The activist referred to concerns surrounding the Corporate Affairs Commission’s use of artificial intelligence, arguing that the experience should serve as a warning to INEC against adopting the technology without addressing potential challenges.
She also called on Nigerians to elect leaders who would be willing to submit themselves to public scrutiny and accountability.
“To get what you are asking for, we have to first vote in those who are not afraid of accountability, transparency and scrutiny!” Yesufu stated.
She maintained that citizens seeking answers about governance should pay close attention to the individuals they elect into public office.
“Whatever you need answers to when it comes to governance starts and ends with who is voted into office,” she added.
INEC’s proposed adoption of AI has generated debate ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly over the role technology should play in strengthening the credibility, transparency and security of the electoral process.
The commission’s chairman, Joash Amupitan, has said AI must not be allowed to determine the outcome of the 2027 general election. He explained that the technology could support electoral logistics, identify anomalies and strengthen safeguards, but should not replace established procedures for determining results.
Yesufu’s criticism adds to the wider discussion about the appropriate use of emerging technologies in Nigeria’s electoral system, with questions remaining about transparency, accountability and the safeguards required to maintain public confidence in election results.
