Human rights activist and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain, Aisha Yesufu, has expressed concern over what she described as the undue emphasis placed on the academic certificates of political candidates during elections.
Yesufu argued that while educational qualifications are important, greater attention should be paid to the competence, integrity and capacity of candidates seeking elective offices.
According to her, Nigerians should focus more on the ability of aspirants to provide effective leadership and solve the country’s challenges rather than making academic certificates the central issue in assessing their suitability for public office.
She maintained that the Constitution already stipulates the minimum educational requirements for elective positions, stressing that public debate should instead centre on candidates’ vision, track record and commitment to good governance.
The activist also called on voters to critically evaluate those seeking political office based on their character, performance and policy direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu urged Nigerians to demand accountability from political leaders and make informed choices at the polls, insisting that credible leadership remains key to addressing the nation’s socio-economic and security challenges.
