The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to establish dedicated voting centres for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in nine local government areas of Plateau State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The arrangement is aimed at ensuring that displaced Nigerians are not disenfranchised because of their displacement and can participate in the electoral process.
INEC said the initiative would provide eligible IDPs with access to polling facilities within their areas of residence, particularly those affected by insecurity and displacement.
The commission is expected to work with relevant stakeholders in identifying suitable locations for the voting centres and ensuring that necessary electoral infrastructure is provided.
The affected local government areas are among communities that have experienced displacement as a result of persistent security challenges, forcing residents to move away from their original places of residence.
The establishment of the centres is expected to ease the difficulties faced by displaced voters who may otherwise be unable to return to their communities to exercise their franchise during elections.
The move is also in line with efforts to promote inclusiveness in the electoral process and ensure that vulnerable groups are not excluded from participating in the 2027 elections.
INEC has continued to emphasise the importance of expanding access to the electoral process, particularly for citizens whose circumstances may make voting at their original polling units difficult.
The planned voting centres for IDPs will therefore be an important component of the commission’s preparations for the 2027 elections, especially in conflict-affected areas where displacement remains a major challenge to political participation.
The initiative is expected to help broaden voter participation in Plateau State while strengthening efforts to ensure that displacement does not translate into disenfranchisement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
