Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the 2027 general elections will serve as a referendum on the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Atiku made this known through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, on Monday night while responding to recent allegations by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC had earlier accused Atiku of attempting to reposition the opposition for selfish reasons, alleging that his ultimate aim was to regain access to state resources.
Dismissing the claim, Ibe said Atiku’s actions were motivated by Nigerians’ aspirations for a better life, not personal gain.
“It’s clear that these people were never prepared for governance. All they’re interested in is politics,” Ibe said. “They’ve gone to extreme lengths to ensure the demise of progress. Every action they’ve taken contradicts the very essence of democracy.”
He also criticized the Tinubu-led administration for inefficiency, citing the example of a 700-kilometre road project where only 30 kilometres have been completed in two years.
“They rolled out all the drums to celebrate just 4% of a project. Isn’t that absurd? The funds wasted on that celebration could have built several more kilometres of that road,” Ibe stated.
He further decried the worsening socio-economic conditions under the APC government, noting that Nigeria has become the “poverty capital of the world” and now leads Africa in child malnutrition.
Defending Atiku’s integrity, Ibe said the former vice president has always financed his political ambitions independently and has a proven record in business.
“Where were these critics when His Excellency was already well-established long before democracy began in 1999? Atiku has run multi-million-dollar businesses, employed thousands, and funded his own campaigns,” he said.
He urged the APC to focus on governance rather than fixating on Atiku, stressing that the 2027 elections will be a contest between President Tinubu and the rest of Nigeria.
