You just knew it would be him. Manchester United could wobble, they could squander their lead, and they could take the game to the very brink of extra time, but you knew, on some deeper, molecular level, that Zlatan Ibrahimovic would save the day. There was no one United fans would rather have seen presented with the golden chance to win the game than their totemic Swedish talisman. On and off the pitch, he leads by example. His first goal, a devilishly swerving free kick, should have set United on their way to a comfortable victory. His second one certainly did.
Poor Southampton. They dominated the opening exchanges, broke the deadlock with a perfectly good goal only to see it disallowed, fought back from 0-2 down to 2-2 and had the agony of an Oriel Romeu header bouncing back off the woodwork. Perhaps, on a similarly deep, molecular level, they knew it just wasn’t going to be their day. Credit to this team, though. If they can show this level of fight — not to mention this level of threat from Manolo Gabbiadini — they should recover their swooning league form before too long.
