Cardi B has gone from stripper, to Instagram and reality TV star, to Grammy-nominated rapper.

Speaking to The Guardian, Cardi – real name Belcalis Almanzar – said: ‘Would people feel some type of way if I was a cashier-turned-rapper? People want me to be so full of shame that I used to dance. I would never be ashamed of it.

‘I made a lot of money, I had a good time and it showed me a lot – it made me open my eyes about how people are, how men are, about hunger and passion and ambition.’

She explained: ‘I was dictated to, and had to do things I didn’t want to do because I was living under a man’s roof, in his mom’s house, in an apartment with two pitbulls and bedbugs, and I didn’t have money. ‘I was living in a space where I couldn’t even pay rent and people threw that in your face all the time.’

Cardi is now engaged to Migos rapper Offset, and her career is going from strength to strength. Her single Bodak Yellow knocked Taylor Swift off the number one spot Stateside and became the first single by a solo female rapper to hit the top spot since Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop (That Thing) in 1998. And the song has earned Cardi two Grammy nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.
