A top Yoruba monarch, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi has passed on. Alaafin Adeyemi was 83 years old and the longest-reigning Alaafin ever, having ruled for 52 years. He was the third Alaafin from the Alowodu Ruling House.

Accordingly to the report, Alaafin Adeyemi died in the late hours of Friday at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.
The remains of the traditional ruler were taken to Oyo in the early hours of Saturday, 23rd April 2022 and traditional rites began.
The late monarch, popularly known as “Iku Baba Yeye”, was born Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi on October 15, 1938, in the Alowolodu Royal House of the famous Oyo town. He was crowned as Alaafin on November 18, 1970, and succeeded Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I.
From the information at our disposal, the next Alaafin of Oyo will come from the Agunloye Ruling House where Alaafin Adeyemi’s predecessor, Alaafin Ladigbolu came from.
The family of the late Alaafin Adeyemi received the monarch’s remains at Idi-Igba, Oyo town early Saturday morning.
The Oyo State Government is expected to make an official statement upon receiving the report of the monarch’s passing from the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi’, Bashorun of Oyo. By tradition, Basorun of Oyo would take over pending the installation of a new Alaafin.
The monarch’s death came after the demise of the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, who respectively died on 12th December 2021, and 2nd January 2022.
May the soul of the top monarchs rest in peace!
