Concrete roads, as opposed to asphalt ones, are being pushed for wider use by the federal government due to their lower costs and greater longevity.
Minister of Works Dave Umahi claims that concrete roads will pay off in the long run and last for 50 years.
Umahi made this statement at Akure, the capital of Ondo State. He argued that the federal government’s decision to prioritise concrete roads is consistent with its pledge to maximise infrastructure investments and support nationwide sustainable development.
While checking on the progress of the Akure-Ado Ekiti road, he announced that all national road projects that are less than 20% complete would be reworked with concrete pavement.
“I have to tell you something very crucial about the implementation of concrete technology on our roadways.
To illustrate my point, consider the widespread use of 50-year-old concrete for roadway construction.
As a result, “cement has a local content; almost everything we need is not produced in Nigeria,” the author continues, “and you find out that we are having so much pressure on the Naira.”
