The Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) has taken over a case that was previously being handled by the police.
The case involves Mr. Olaposi Oginni, the former chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Ogun State, as well as two other officials of the party.
According to InfoStride News, the party’s national headquarters had already expelled Oginni for engaging in actions that were detrimental to the party as well as misappropriating funds.

Other party executives went to the police station to seek the assistance of security agents to open the party secretariat, but Oginni reported the situation to the police, citing theft and malicious damage. Later, detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja took Oginni into custody in Abeokuta. He was then transferred to Abuja after E. A. Igwe and co. submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police on behalf of the NNPP national leadership. Oginni was arrested in Abeokuta.
According to Infostride News, attorneys working for the DPP told the Abeokuta Magistrate Court, which is located in Isabo, on Wednesday that they would be taking over the prosecution of the case from the police.
The court, after noting that it had been earlier sent a letter by the DPP, granted the DPP permission to take over the case and ordered the police prosecutor to hand over the case file to the state prosecutors. The court also noted that it had earlier been served a letter by the DPP.
Following this, the attorney for the prosecution approached the judge and asked for the case to be postponed, stating that they required further time to review the case file as well as each of the witnesses’ comments.
The trial of the case has been postponed to the 30th of November in 2023.
On Thursday, Olowu Olayemi Omokehinde, who serves as the Public Relations Officer for the party in the state, provided confirmation of the new development to the media.
“We are very happy that the DPP has taken over the prosecution of this case,” he stated in a statement that was made accessible to the media. We have unwavering faith that justice will be served, and that the facts surrounding this matter will be brought to light.
