In a proactive move against cybercrime, operatives from the Makurdi Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) made a significant breakthrough on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, with the arrest of 14 individuals suspected of involvement in internet fraud.
The arrests took place at a purported “Yahoo Academy” operating discreetly within a residential area along Achusa Road in Makurdi, Benue State.
Acting on actionable intelligence, EFCC operatives raided a three-bedroom apartment believed to be serving as a training centre for potential internet fraudsters. The suspects, identified as Asongu Terungwa, Aese Sonter, Nyoosu Terungwa, John Kator, Udi Micheal Aodona, Terungu Mnyam, Iorwuese Terhide, Ule Francis, Imoter Gloor Emmanuel, Samuel Lubem, Wergba Tertamge, Erukaa Ephraim, Agenale Franklin, and Abechi Toryila, were apprehended during the operation.

Seized items from the scene of the raid included laptops, ATM cards, mobile phones, a Firman Generator, and a Toyota Corolla car. These items are crucial evidence that will aid in the ongoing investigations.
Upon completion of the investigation process, the suspects will face charges in court. The EFCC remains committed to ensuring that those involved in fraudulent activities face the full weight of the law, thereby safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s digital space and financial systems.
This operation serves as a reminder of the EFCC’s relentless efforts to combat cybercrime and protect innocent citizens from falling victim to online scams. By dismantling illegal operations such as the so-called “Yahoo Academy,” law enforcement agencies are taking proactive steps to curb the proliferation of internet fraud networks across the country.
Members of the public must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. Collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and the community are essential in the ongoing fight against cybercrime, as they help identify and apprehend perpetrators before they can cause further harm.
As the investigation progresses, the EFCC will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that justice is served and that those found guilty of engaging in internet fraud are held accountable for their actions. The arrests made in Makurdi serve as a clear message that cybercriminals will not go unpunished, and law enforcement agencies will continue to pursue them until they are brought to justice.
